Capture-Recapture for GCSE Mathematics

Introduction

Capture-recapture is a statistical method used to estimate the population size when it's difficult to count everyone. It's based on the principle that if you randomly sample, mark, and release individuals, the proportion of marked individuals you recapture will give you an estimate of the total population.

Main Content

1. Capture a random sample of individuals (n).

2. Mark and release the captured individuals.

3. Wait a period of time.

4. Recapture another random sample (m).

5. Count the number of marked individuals (r) in the second sample.

6. Use the formula: N = (n * m) / r

Practice Problems

A zoologist captures and tags 50 rabbits. Two weeks later, she captures 30 rabbits, of which 10 are tagged. Estimate the population size of the rabbit colony.

N = (50 * 30) / 10 = 150 rabbits

A fish ecologist estimates the population of a lake to be 1000 fish. After marking and releasing 150 fish, he catches 50 fish and finds that 15 are marked. Is his estimate accurate?

N = (150 * 50) / 15 = 1000 fish

The estimate is accurate.
