All living organisms are composed of microscopic building blocks called cells. In Year 7 Biology, students learn to compare animal and plant cells. Both types of cells share three vital organelles: the nucleus (contains genetic material and controls cellular activity), the cytoplasm (jelly-like fluid where chemical reactions happen), and the cell membrane (controls what enters and exits the cell). Both also contain mitochondria for aerobic respiration. Plant cells have three additional structures: a rigid cellulose cell wall for support, chloroplasts containing chlorophyll to absorb sunlight for photosynthesis, and a large permanent vacuole filled with cell sap to keep the cell turgid.
