Poster 1: The GCSE Science Calculation Traps
Anchor poster for physics and chemistry lab walls. Highlighting standard SI conversions and multi-step formulas.
1. Current: Milliamps to Amps
$$\text{mA} \div 1000 = \text{A}$$
Examiners routinely give $250\text{ mA}$ in $Q = It$ or $V = IR$. Substituting $250$ instead of $0.25$ costs both the substitution mark and the final answer mark.
2. Energy: Kilojoules to Joules
$$\text{kJ} \times 1000 = \text{J}$$
Specific Heat Capacity ($E = mc\Delta\theta$) requires Joules. If energy is given as $4.8\text{ kJ}$, convert to $4,800\text{ J}$ before rearranging for $\theta$ or $c$.
3. Volume: $\text{cm}^3$ to $\text{dm}^3$ (Titrations)
$$\text{cm}^3 \div 1000 = \text{dm}^3$$
In Chemistry concentration calculations ($\text{conc} = \frac{\text{moles}}{\text{vol}}$), burette and pipette titres are in $\text{cm}^3$. Always divide by $1,000$ before calculating concentration in $\text{mol/dm}^3$.
4. Time: Minutes to Seconds
$$\text{minutes} \times 60 = \text{seconds}$$
Power ($P = E/t$), Charge ($Q = It$), and Acceleration ($a = \Delta v/t$) all require time in seconds. 5 minutes is $300\text{ s}$, not $5\text{ s}$.
5. Square Root Rearrangements
$$E_k = \frac{1}{2}mv^2 \implies v = \sqrt{\frac{2E_k}{m}}$$
Over 40% of candidates forget the square root when finding speed ($v$) or spring extension ($e = \sqrt{2E_e/k}$), calculating $v^2$ and stopping there.
Never write just a raw numerical answer. Writing your formula and substitution guarantees 2 to 3 marks under Error Carried Forward (ECF) even if your final arithmetic has a typo.

A concise recall of a single fact, equation, or organelle. No explanations required.
Writing a lengthy paragraph and running out of time.
"Mitochondria" or "Gravitational potential energy".
Describe
State what happens or recall the pattern / trend from a graph or table. Do not explain why.
Explaining the cause instead of detailing the observed trend with paired data values.
"As temperature increases from 20°C to 40°C, rate increases from 2 to 8 cm³/min, peaking at 40°C."
Explain
Give the scientific reason why or how something happens. Must use "because" or "therefore".
Just repeating what is on the graph without using scientific concepts (e.g. kinetic energy, collisions).
"...because substrate molecules have more kinetic energy, resulting in more frequent successful collisions."
Evaluate
Compare both sides (advantages vs. disadvantages), use data from the prompt, and write a reasoned conclusion.
Listing only pros without any cons, or failing to state a final justified verdict.
"Method A is more reliable because... however Method B is cheaper... in conclusion Method A is better because..."
Suggest
Apply your knowledge to a novel scenario not directly on the syllabus. There is rarely only one correct answer.
Panicking and leaving the question blank because "we were never taught this plant/animal".
Think about fundamental principles (surface area, temperature, pressure, enzyme shape) and apply logically.

Poster 3: Required Practical Error Eliminator
The definitive guide to systematic error, random error, resolution, and repeat reliability.
Systematic Errors
Errors that cause all readings to differ from the true value by a consistent amount.
Zero Error: Balance shows $0.03\text{ g}$ before anything is placed on it. (Fix: Press tare or subtract the offset).
Calibration Slip: Thermometer reading $1^\circ\text{C}$ too high across all water baths.
Examiner Tip: Repeating measurements does not eliminate systematic errors!
Random Errors
Unpredictable fluctuations caused by human reaction, environmental draughts, or reading angles.
Parallax Error: Reading a measuring cylinder or burette from above or below the meniscus line. (Fix: View at eye level).
Reaction Time: Stopwatch delay when timing oscillations or colour changes.
Examiner Tip: Eliminate random errors by repeating 3 times, discarding anomalies, and calculating a mean.
Resolution & Precision
The smallest change in quantity that produces an observable change on the measuring scale.

The single most dangerous exam habit that costs candidates 4 to 8 marks per paper.
Official Exam Board Rule: Negative Marking by Contradiction
If a question asks for two reasons, and a student writes three, an incorrect third point directly cancels out a correct one!
Question:"State two advantages of generating electricity using wind turbines instead of coal power stations. [2 marks]"
Student A writes three points:
Does not produce carbon dioxide / greenhouse gases. ✓ (Award 1 mark)
It is a renewable energy resource. ✓ (Award 1 mark)
Wind turbines are 100% reliable and always produce electricity. ✗ (Incorrect contradiction!)
Examiner Score: 2 marks − 1 contradiction penalty = 1 mark awarded!
Student B follows the rule:
Does not emit greenhouse gases. ✓
Wind is renewable and will not run out. ✓
Examiner Score: Full 2 marks awarded!
Golden Takeaway: If the exam paper asks for 2 points, write ONLY your 2 best points. Never guess a 3rd point hoping "the examiner will just pick the right ones".
