How to Accurately Mark Your Own Past Papers
Most students award themselves 8–15 marks more than an official examiner would. Here is how official markers award marks:
M — Method Marks
Awarded for correct mathematical or scientific steps. Working must be visible. Even if final arithmetic is wrong, M marks can still be awarded.
A — Accuracy Marks
Awarded for the correct final numerical answer. Strictly dependent on M marks: you cannot receive an A mark if the preceding M mark was lost.
B — Independent Marks
Awarded for a correct factual statement, definition, or unit regardless of intermediate working.
ft — Follow Through
If you carry forward an erroneous value from part (a) into part (b), but use the correct mathematical operation in (b), you gain full credit for part (b).
Examiner Rule: The List Rule
If a question asks for ONE reason (1 mark) and you provide TWO reasons—one correct and one incorrect—the incorrect answer cancels the correct answer (Right + Wrong = 0). Never hedge your bets with multiple conflicting answers!
