Excretion is the biological process of removing metabolic waste products formed in cells (such as poisonous urea, carbon dioxide, and excess salts/water). The kidneys play a central role in excretion and osmoregulation (controlling water balance in blood). Blood enters kidneys via the renal artery, where millions of microscopic filtering units (nephrons) filter out urea, excess water, and mineral ions to form urine. Cleaned blood returns via the renal vein, while urine travels down the ureters to be stored in the bladder before exiting via the urethra. When kidneys fail, patients undergo dialysis (artificial blood filtration) or receive a kidney transplant.
