Examiner Strategy: How to Approach Hard Exam Questions
Top students don't just know the theory—they use systematic techniques to extract every method, accuracy, and working mark:
1. The BUG Reading Method
Box the command word, Underline numerical values and units, and Glance at the marks to determine how many distinct points must be made.
2. The 3-Pass Timing Rule
Pass 1: Answer every question you are 100% confident in.
Pass 2: Work through calculations and 6-markers.
Pass 3: Tackle challenge and proof questions.
3. Show Every Working Step
Even if your final arithmetic is wrong, intermediate working steps qualify for Method (M) marks and Follow-Through (ft) credit. Never leave blank space!
4. Beware the List Rule
If asked for ONE reason, writing TWO conflicting reasons (one correct, one incorrect) scores zero. Only commit to your strongest, most precise explanation.
Guidance on using our exam practice packs to maximize your grades.
How are the practice exam questions on this site structured?
Questions are organized by subject, tier (Foundation vs. Higher), and curriculum module. Each question pack includes step-by-step model solutions, official mark scheme criteria (AO1, AO2, AO3), and common examiner pitfall diagnostics.
Are mark schemes included with every question set?
Yes. All question sets, PDF downloads, and challenge guides provide complete mark schemes with Method (M), Accuracy (A), and Independent (B) marks clearly distinguished so students can accurately self-assess.
Which exam boards do these practice questions cover?
Our exam questions cover AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR Gateway/Twenty First Century, and CIE. Because UK exam boards follow the identical Department for Education syllabus criteria, our topic questions are universally applicable.
What is the BUG method for answering exam questions?
The BUG technique is an examiner-approved reading strategy: (B) Box the command word (e.g., Explain, Compare), (U) Underline key scientific data and values, and (G) Glance at the marks available to determine the number of distinct points needed.
How do students get full 6/6 marks on extended science questions?
To achieve Level 3 (5-6 marks), answers must be logically structured with correct scientific terminology, clear cause-and-effect links ('therefore', 'as a result'), and address all bullet points in the prompt without contradicting statements (the List Rule).
